SCHOOL OF CHOICE INFORMATION
-
Whether you are a District 49 resident or reside in another school district, school of choice provides the opportunity to enroll your child in a school outside of your zoned neighborhood school. The approval process is based on space availability and the ability of the school of choice to meet the educational needs of your child. The review and approval process for school of choice is at the school level. Central Registration cannot answer as to whether or not a school of choice application may be accepted.
To start, fill out a school of choice application(s) for your child(ren). Then submit it directly to the school(s) you would like your child(ren) to attend.
Once you have received your child(ren)’s approved school of choice application, letter or email and they are currently not enrolled in a District 49 school or they are attending Banning Lewis Ranch Academy, GOAL Academy, Rocky Mountain Classical Academy or Power Technical Early College, you will need to fill out a registration application. All supporting registration documents (child's birth certificate, child’s immunization record, parent's ID and proof of residence and the approved school of choice) must be submitted with the online registration.
Please note that middle and high school students will be required to provide transcripts to the school after the registration application has been completed and processed. For parents/guardians whose child(ren) currently attend a District 49 coordinated (neighborhood) school but wish for their child to attend a different District 49 coordinated (neighborhood) school:A new online registration is not required. If your school of choice application is approved, the new school will work with the previous school to transfer your enrollment over. For parents/guardians whose child(ren) currently attend a coordinated (neighborhood) school but are interested in having them attend the following charter schools: Grand Peak Academy (GPA), Liberty Tree Academy (LTA) or Pikes Peak School of Expeditionary Learning (PPSEL):A new registration and school of choice applications are not required. These charter schools utilize the same registration and student information systems. If you seek and are granted acceptance into ICA, LTA or PPSEL, they will work with the previous school to transfer the enrollment over.

How are School of Choice applications approved?
The selection process is based on a priority system. Residents of District 49 are considered first. Non-residents are considered second. Administrators make every effort to accommodate requests; however, choice enrollment acceptance is limited by space, staff availability and the schools' Choice procedures. Other determining factors involve the requested grade level or availability of special programs and facilities to meet a student’s educational needs.
-
If my School of Choice application is accepted, how long is it valid?
School of Choice approved applications are good for the duration of an academic level. For example, a student who is accepted into an elementary school does not have to complete a new choice application until they're ready to enter middle school. District 49 residents who move out of the district may finish the current school year, but must submit a new choice application for the following school year.
-
Will my high school student’s eligibility be impacted by using choice enrollment?
Restricted athletic eligibility is a factor that families should consider before transferring to another school. Parent/guardians are encouraged to completely read and understand the Colorado High School Activities Association rules. According to the CHSAA Transfer Rule, "A student who transfers to a different high school without a bona fide family move over the summer will have restricted eligibility for the first 50 percent of the season in the upcoming school year in those sports (sponsored by CHSAA) in which they participated during the calendar year preceding the transfer.” If you have other questions, please contact your school's athletic director.
